How did you go about researching the events? Were there any details you had to tweak to make the plot flow? This novel is full of rich details about the respective eras. Both are interesting eras to compare and contrast. (One newspaper described the neighborhood as full of “goats, swamps, rocks, and shanties.”) I chose 1985 because the city was going through a Gilded Age of its own then, with bankers and their Rolex watches. I chose 1884 because that was the year the Dakota opened – a luxury apartment building in the wilds of the Upper West Side of Manhattan. The Address is a fascinating story that takes place in 18, what made you decide to write this novel from the point of view of these two radically different eras? The genre is probably best described as historical fiction peppered with an element of mystery. The book takes place in New York City’s famous Dakota apartment house, and weaves the story of a young woman who comes to work in the building in 1884, with that of an interior decorator charged with stripping an apartment of all its period details in 1985. For those who have not read The Address, how would you describe it? The Pitch Wars led her to obtain a literary agent and publishing deal with Putnam for her first book The Reader. Chee was paired up with author Renée Ahdieh. After obtaining her masters degree, Chee entered a writing contest called The Pitch Wars, which gives new writers a chance to show their work to literary agents by pairing them up with established mentors. It is in your spirit, or it is nowhereĪrtist David Lupton first worked with Ursula K. In his introduction, Professor Brian Attebery discusses the multiple meanings that can be gleaned from The Dispossessed, and its continuing relevance, observing that, ‘whatever we think it is saying, it might well say something new tomorrow’. For this unique illustrated edition, artist David Lupton worked closely with the author’s son, Theo Downes-Le Guin, to recreate the twin worlds of Le Guin’s imagination, Urras and Anarres, and her revolutionary scientist, Shevek, while the endpapers feature maps of the two planets. Within the timeline of Le Guin’ celebrated series the Hainish Cycle, The Dispossessed is chronologically the first volume. Wise, complex and thrilling, The Dispossessed is the sort of science fiction only Le Guin could have written her abiding interest in anthropology and human nature summons worlds that inspire total belief from her readers, and she gives no easy answers to the many questions that the book poses. ‘One of the greats … Not just a science-fiction writer a literary icon’ And there’s always spontaneous conversation with other browsers over a certain book, or someone’s fandom attire, or simply our shared experiences at the conference. My favorite part, though, is browsing the vendor hall-stopping to smell the bookish candles, and drool over every beautiful cover. The classes were informative as always, and the keynotes were both hilarious and inspiring. Realm Makers is such an immersive experience, it takes a while to fully catch your breath after it’s all over.ĭespite the bustle and over-stimulation of the venue this year, it was a refreshing weekend with the unique fellowship that makes it special every year. I’ve been collecting my thoughts on this for a couple weeks, as I slowly adjust back to “real life”. Vesalio, a Belgian guy at the service of the Spanish Empire, more specifically, at the service of King Charles I and King Philip II of Spain, decided it was a nonsense, and introduced the fashion of only one person cutting the body while explaining their actions and adapting the book-ish information to real life. As a result, students got into a mess and understood little to nothing about what they were seeing. The funny thing is, when Physicians taught in the universities, they used to read a book while a different person with no theoretical basis opened the human body in the autopsies. Physicians had a higher status whereas Surgeons were just carpenters of bones. On the other hand, Surgeons disregarded Physicians because they were theoretical pricks who very rarely touched a body and knew nothing about how to amputate a leg. Physicians looked down on Surgeons because they knew no Latin or Greek and studied nothing from books, as most of them were illiterate, so their experience was gained from real patients in battlefields and boats. The science part is just anecdotical but I was thrilled when they talked about important historic discoveries or about German anatomy books (has that last thing really changed?).Ībove all, I liked seeing how Surgeons and Physicians were still separated. But I surely enjoy m/m romances, and a good historical one is difficult to find. Ok, I wouldn't have liked this book so much if it were a boring essay. I may sound like a freak but one of the reasons I loved this book so much was the medical stuff! Frankly relating the virulent homophobia of western society and its dire consequences to the Hebrew Scriptures and early Church history (a move to which I shall return), Crompton argues that "from the very birth of Christianity, a hatred existed fully comparable to the hatred directed at pagans and Jews in the first millennium and at heretics, Jews, and witches in the first seven centuries of the second" (xi). On a fundamental level, the ampersand of the title points to the bitter irony that those who practice same-sex relations have often been excluded from "civilization" in the Christian West. Reflecting on the title of Louis Crompton's magisterial Homosexuality & Civilization, one might see that this is an artful and well-planned work of scholarship, for its multiple ironies sum up many of the themes and polemical issues pertinent to the book.
